How Many Lightbulbs does it Take to Change a Christian?
Claire Foster & David Shreeve, Church House Publishing 2007
Price £4.99, ISBN 978-07151412-4.
A review by:
Quentin Pickard
This small booklet is presumably intended to provide a
light-hearted (please forgive the pun) approach to energy-saving
and reducing the ecological footprint. While any contribution on
this topic is generally to be welcomed, nevertheless this
reviewer felt it was difficult to know who the booklet was aimed
at. On the one hand it is very colourful and straightforward,
with numerous illustrations and simple text, which gives the
immediate impression that it is aimed at children and younger
people. On the other hand, suggestions for putting a ‘toilet
hog’ in your cistern are clearly aimed at adults, as is the
comment ‘do you really need to drive your child to school?’
Is it really necessary to mention nowadays about installing
energy-saving light bulbs, or to be reminded not to clean your
teeth under a running tap? Surely everyone is now conscious of
energy saving measures such as these? On the other hand, there
is some more useful information included – eg CO2 comparisons
for different plane and train journeys.
The references and web-sites mentioned are always useful, but I
think it is a pity that many people will assume this is a book
for children.
