As a network we are going to put together a
liturgy for this year’s Environment Sunday linking in with World
Environment Day.
World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of
the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates
worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political
attention and action.
The World Environment Day slogan selected for 2007 is Melting Ice –
a Hot Topic? In support of International Polar Year, the WED theme
selected for 2007 focuses on the effects that climate change is
having on polar ecosystems and communities, and the ensuing
consequences around the world.
Environment Sunday is the Sunday nearest to June 5th and so this
year it will fall on June 3rd.
So how can you take part?
1 Explore the World Environment Day website
2 Read the following Bible passages:
Job 6: 14-18
Job 37: 5-13
Job 38: 28-30
Wisdom 16: 20-29
Sirach 43: 13-22
Song of Three Youths 46-49, 52
2 Esdras 3:12-19
3 Pray and reflect on what you’ve read in 1 and 2.
4 Send in suggestions for:
Prayers
Hymns
Music
Activities
Reflections or Poems
Talks or Sermons
All of your suggestions will then be collated and a draft liturgy
circulated for further comment. A final version will then be
available in plenty of time for it to be used in your local
congregation on Sunday June 3rd.
