Walk to the WAVE

October 26, 2009 By: Coordinator Category: Campaigns

DSC00854Setting off on November 5th to walk from Huddersfield to London is Nicki Smith of Lindley Methodist Church.  It will take her 30 days, ending at the service at Westminster Central Hall on 5th December, and then the WAVE campaign walk round parliament.  She is hoping to call on Methodist Churches on the way, and talk with people there about our Christian response to climate change.  This action has been spurred on by the publication of the Methodist Conference report “Hope for God’s Future”.

She is still making arrangements for the walk, and would particulary welcome offers of accomodation and people to walk with her in the following areas:-
Clay Cross, Swanwick, Heanor, Trowell, Kegworth.  Areas between S. Leicester and Northampton. Between Leighton Buzzard and Barnet.

bethesda#1Work commenced in September on the installation of a major photovoltaic array on the south facing roof of Bethesda Methodist Church in Cheltenham. Though scarcely visible from the street, the 32 solar PV (Photovoltaic) panels are expected to generate upwards of 7,000 kW hrs of electricity annually for most of their 25-yr life span. The project is the result of almost two years of intensive planning and fund-raising by a church which has already received two national eco-awards for its environmental stewardship programme. Quaker – Zero Growth Economy Conference

October 21, 2009 By: Coordinator Category: Study/Theology

A Zero Growth Economy? What would it mean for us all?

Some environmentalists have called for the establishment of a zero-growth economy as the only possible route to real sustainability. Some economists have pointed out that eras of high government spending on environmental projects have coincided exclusively with times of high economic growth and a financial “feel-good” mood.

We are now on the verge of a world-wide recession, with banks and businesses failing and governments casting around in vain for a solution. Whatever the outcome, we will all still be feeling the ripples, if not the tidal waves, by the autumn.

The conference examined the implications of a zero growth economy on both the environment and on people, and considered the right relationships between protecting the environment and alleviating poverty.
